For some reason I always feel a need to try new things. And not just in
life — even in my design work I constantly want to explore different
processes and mediums. So last summer I took some of my designs
and decided to give each one a new life, as an art work on its own.

The designs I create for my Aimée Wilder brand end up in a more detailed, often maximal environment. And though I still love creating this kind of immersive, all-over space, I also really love minimal interiors and architecture. There was something so appealing to me about reversing the usual role of a patterned design in an interior space. Instead of filling the space floor to ceiling, my new silkscreened Shadow Wildling works distill a pattern onto the single plane of a painting, which creates the perfect focal point for a classic interior. Wallpapers usually come in a bazillion colorways, but here the choice of material and color are pared down to essentials.

About the colors — the darks are blends of deep pigments, and the whites are subtle pastels with hints of various neon pigments that catch the light. There’s a lot of depth and richness within the muted tones. As we’ve been living with the paintings in the apartment, we notice a lot of subtleties in the colors. In different kinds of light the paintings may be more nuanced and desaturated, or bold and prominent, with the backgrounds catching the light in surprising ways.

Art works are also more mobile than wallpaper. It’s nice that you don’t have to destroy it when you move — a painting can live in and help shape a wide variety of environments, which in a way is more sustainable. And since the pattern doesn’t overwhelm the space, these pieces allow for a greater degree of design precision that enhances the original intention of each pattern.
I was thrilled to debut Shadow Wildling at a presentation during 2021 Art Basel Miami Beach, in an environment already papered with my Jungle Dream Charcoal pattern.
